It is one of those things that people have debated about over and over again. Here is the skinny: Salt works great to keep fish healthy especially in the winter time when your pond bacteria has either died off or suspended. It helps kills some virus and most importantly helps the koi cope with nitrites in the water. Especially if you have high nitrites this is a must, until the nitrites are lowered!!!
Salts to use:
The cheapest and most dependable salt you can buy and use is Morton salt for water softeners. You can go to Costco or Home Depot to buy the 40 or 50 lbs for under $4.00. Yes, there are other salts one can use...why take chances? We personally like the Morton yellow bag pellets because they dissolve quick and the sale is 99.999% clean.
Application:
Don't add all at once. Divide up in three days to ensure proper dosage and lessen water variation.
1 pounds per hundred gallons = 0.1%
3 pounds per hundred gallons = 0.3%
6 pounds per hundred gallons = 0.6%
Water weed like plants such as celery, water lettuce, string algae, and elodea will turn yellow. Some people like to maintain 0.05% salt in their ponds as a "tonic". In most areas, this isn't necessary, but since you mention your fish seemed to respond very well to the initial 0.1%, this might be a consideration. To ensure you put the right quantities of salt please use a salt meter.
